Edinburgh was extremely crowded when we traveled there in August. The Fringe Festival takes over the city for the entire month, bringing in over 70,000 extra people.
The Fringe festival was founded in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival. It is now one of the largest art festivals in the world.
As you walk down the Royal Mile, you will find street artists, comedians, musicians, and entertainers all performing and engaging the crowds. The age ranges dramatically. I noticed lots of college aged kids handing out fliers for stand-up comedy shows performed throughout the night.
We mostly avoided the performers as our goal was to walk the Royal Mile from the beginning to the end.
